The Council has confirmed the new bus bays at the former Pontypridd bingo hall site will be brought into permanent use from September 16 – and has also finalised the arrangements for all local services stopping at this new location.

Last month, a wider development of the former bingo hall and Angharad’s Nightclub site was opened – creating a vibrant and quality space that is a clear arrival point for visitors at the southern end of Pontypridd Town Centre.

A section of the site along the boundary with A4054 Sardis Road has been used to create new bus bays – enabling local bus journeys to serve this end of the town for the first time. Located opposite Pontypridd Railway Station, they are also well positioned to promote integrated travel between bus and rail.

The Council has now confirmed that the site will be known as Railway Station South and its two new bus stops (E5 and E6) will be brought into permanent use for local bus services from Monday, September 16.

The above image shows the two new bus stops – with E6 being pictured in the foreground and E5, closer to the Sardis Gyratory, in the background.

Railway Station South stop E5 will be used by the following services:

  • Adventure Travel Service 102 (weekdays, onward travel to Tesco Upper Boat and Parc Nantgarw)
  • Adventure Travel Service 112 (Sundays, onward travel to Tesco Upper Boat and Parc Nantgarw)
  • Stagecoach Service 103 (onward travel to Sainsbury’s and Oaklands, Cilfynydd)
  • Stagecoach Service 120 (Blaencwm to Caerphilly)

Railway Station South stop E6 will be used by the following services:

  • Stagecoach Service 132 (Maerdy to Cardiff)
  • Stagecoach Service X32 (Maerdy to Cardiff)

Please note, Stagecoach services 103, 120 and 132 will no longer use the stops on Catherine Street (E2 and E4 respectively) and will permanently move to the new Railway Station South stop. Adventure Travel Services 102 and 112 will continue to serve Catherine Street (E3) as well as the new location.

A spokesperson for Rhondda Cynon Taf Council said: “The Council has confirmed the arrangements for the new Railway Station South bus stop to be used by local services for the first time, from September 16. The new bays were a vital part of the successful Park and Ride facility used in the National Eisteddfod, and, following a short break in which final arrangements were made with local bus operators, they will soon be brought into permanent use.

“The new stop is well positioned so public transport users can more easily alternate between bus and rail for different elements of their journeys – and will complement the recent increase in the frequency of rail services arriving and departing Pontypridd via the South Wales Metro. Today we’ve provided details of which local journeys will serve the new location, enabling bus users to familiarise themselves with the arrangements and plan ahead from September 16.”

Working closely with the Cardiff Capital Region Transport Authority, the Council secured funding for the new bus bays from Welsh Government’s Local Transport Fund and Regional Bus Infrastructure Programme. Visitors to Pontypridd may notice finishing works being undertaken on site until the end of September 2024, but this will not affect the operation of the new bays.
