The South Wales Police and Crime Panel is seeking to appoint 2 Independent Co-opted Members. The Panel is an independent public body established in accordance with the Police Reform and Social Responsibility Act 2011 and is responsible for the following functions:
- Support the South Wales Police and Crime Commissioner (the Commissioner) to exercise their functions effectively.
- Review the Commissioner’s annual draft Police and Crime Plan.
- Review the Crime Commissioner’s annual draft budget.
- Review and scrutinise decisions and actions taken by the Commissioner.
- If necessary, review the proposed appointment or removal of the Chief Constable.
- Make reports or recommendations to the Commissioner as needed.
Applicants for the Independent member roles must not be:
- A member of the South Wales Police and Crime Commissioner’s staff.
- A Police Officer or member of South Wales Police civilian staff.
- A member of Parliament; the Welsh Parliament, or Scottish Parliament.
- A member of a local authority within the South Wales Police area.
The commitment required from an Independent Co-opted Member will typically average 5 meetings per year. Meetings are held during normal office hours and are held in Merthyr Tydfil but may also be held at varying locations throughout the South Wales Police force area. There is no salary for the role, but an allowance is payable.
