The Welsh Medium secondary school in Penywaun has benefitted from a £12.1m investment that has expanded the school’s capacity and provided brand new facilities for staff, pupils and the wider community.
As part of Welsh Government’s Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme (formerly the 21st Century Schools and Colleges Programme), the investment has increased Welsh Medium places at the school by a total of 187 (from 1,038 to 1,225). The Council received a 65% contribution from the Welsh Government in order to deliver the brand new facilities.
Delivered in September 2022, the overall scheme has provided significant teaching and sports facilities in the existing school grounds. It included:
- Demolition of the current caretaker’s house and removal of the school’s temporary classrooms.
- Construction of a new eight-classroom block made up of community rooms, along with school drama and music facilities.
- A new school reception, sports hall, fitness suite and changing rooms, along with a new 45-space parking area with a cycle store.
The wider community will also be able to access some of these facilities, with segregation from pupils attending the school ensured. The development has complemented a new ‘all-weather’ 3G sports pitch which was delivered for school and community use by the Council in April 2019.
Following delivery of the scheme, work continued to remodel facilities in the school’s existing block, by the end of March 2023. This includes new Science and Design & Technology classrooms, office accommodation, lecture-style classroom, café and sixth form facilities.
