Flood Alleviation Schemes Overview

As Lead Local Flood Authority for Rhondda Cynon Taf we work to reduce the impact of flooding and to secure funding to design and deliver schemes that will help to reduce the risk of flooding to homes and businesses. These schemes are known as flood alleviation schemes (FAS).

Flood alleviation schemes help to build our resilience to climate change and create safer communities. They also form part of the Council’s wider Local Flood Risk Management Strategy and Action Plan which can be viewed here.

Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council has one of the largest flood risk management capital programmes of any local authority in Wales. Schemes range from minor culvert improvements to more complex local flood alleviation schemes to natural flood management interventions.

The majority of funding for flood risk management in Wales come from the Welsh Government via capital and revenue grants. For more information on how flood alleviation schemes are funded and prioritised in Rhondda Cynon Taf and across Wales, see Section 9 of the Council’s Local Flood Risk Management Strategy and Action Plan.

The following table outlines the number of completed and ongoing schemes:
