What is a Child Protection Enquiry? (Section 47)

If it seems that your child/children (or child you care for) is at risk of harm/or suffering from harm but are not in immediate danger, we will undertake an investigation.

This is detailed under Section 47 of the Children’s Act 1989 and is frequently referred to as a Child Protection Enquiry (Section 47). As part of this process, a Social Worker will want to see your child and speak to your child (if verbal) to find out what life is like for them, what is important to you and your child and any changes you want to make. They will want to speak to you and other people in your network to help gather information and make a decision about whether your child is at significant risk of harm.

Outcomes of the Investigation

  • No further action – if your child/children have not been harmed and are not at risk of being harmed (support via Early Help may be offered).
  • Undertake further assessments to provide care and support.
  • If your child/children are assessed as being at risk of significant harm, an Initial Case Conference will be convened (Initial Child Protection Conference) within 15 days.
  • If your child is at immediate risk, the steps listed under Immediate Concerns would be applied.
