Councillor Dan Owen-Jones is the new Mayor of Rhondda Cynon Taf, having been appointed at the Council’s 29th Annual General Meeting, which took place on Wednesday, May 8th, 2024.

Councillor Owen-Jones, Elected Member for Tonyrefail East Ward, said he is immensely proud, privileged, and humbled to take on the role previously held by Councillor Wendy Lewis, of Llwynypia.

Born and raised at the heart of the Rhondda Valley in Cwmparc, Councillor Owen-Jones is the son of a heroic past service man, a sibling of six, and a proud father, who is looking forward to continue championing the County Borough throughout his new role as Mayor.

Having retired from Site and Construction Management, he is now a Private Consultant, Clerk of Works, and Inspector. He also currently serves as an elected Labour member of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and is a Tonyrefail and District Community Councillor for Penrhiwfer & Edmondstown.

Councillor Dan Owen Jones, Mayor of Rhondda Cynon Taf, speaking following his appointment, said:

“During my tenure as Deputy Mayor, I have been in awe of the magnitude of volunteer work and the commitment shown by so many who are doing their utmost to give betterment and hope to our community. Our County Borough is one that is full of richness, and with the kindness, compassion, and will of us all, we can make a difference together.

Throughout my time in Mayoral Office, I have and will continue to give my heartfelt thanks to our residents who give their time freely and assist wherever there is need. There are no words to describe the invaluable impact felt across our communities as a result of this continued dedication.

“It is a huge honour for me to serve as Mayor of Rhondda Cynon Taf for the ensuing year, especially alongside ongoing support from my daughter Abbie, who I have chosen as my Consort. Abbie’s passion and wealth of local and professional knowledge, including her ability to speak fluent Welsh, will be a valuable asset whilst representing our residents”.

Councillor Dan Owen-Jones’ chosen charities for his year in office are Greenmeadow Disabled Riding School, 2 Wish Cymru’ Llantrisant, Rhondda Polar Bears Disabled Swimming, Dementia & Alzheimer’s Society, and he will also be supporting the Taff Ely Veterans’ in Rhydyfelin.

Also appointed at the Council AGM meeting on Wednesday, May 8th, was Rhondda Cynon Taf Deputy Mayor, Councillor Sheryl Evans, Elected Member for Aberaman Ward.
