Launch Of Welsh Friendly Businesses Campaign

Ton Pentre 1

Local businesses in Treorchy are being urged to support a new Welsh language campaign, encouraging customers to start their conversations in Welsh.

Launched by the Council’s Welsh Services, the campaign aims to promote the Welsh language across our County Borough by asking the local business community to encourage their customers to start their conversations in Welsh.

This aligns with the Council’s five-year Welsh Language Promotional Strategy, which aims to increase the number of Welsh speakers in Rhondda Cynon Taf and to encourage people to use their Welsh skills of all levels in social settings.

The campaign is being launched in Treorchy before being rolled out across Rhondda Cynon Taf, ahead of the National Eisteddfod visiting Rhondda Cynon Taf in 2024 for the first time for almost 70 years.

Councillor Rhys Lewis, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council Cabinet Member for Education, Youth Participation and Welsh Language, said: “We are asking all our businesses in Treorchy and across Rhondda Cynon Taf to encourage their customers to start their conversations in Welsh, from a simple greeting to placing their order in Welsh.

“To ensure the campaign is a great success, we need to involve the whole community - our businesses and residents of all ages and Welsh-speaking abilities.

“We also need the support of our local schools, encouraging their learners to use the Welsh language as much as possible.”

Local schools took part in a competition to design a logo for the campaign, with the winning design created by Lola Jones, of Ton Pentre Junior School. Councillor Rhys Lewis and Councillor Mark Norris, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council Cabinet Member for Prosperity and Development, visited the school to congratulate Year Six leaner Lola on her success. The campaign logo will now be displayed in participating local businesses in Treorchy and across Rhondda Cynon Taf.
