What is A Welsh Coal Mining Experience?
We’re a unique tourist attraction based near Porth – the gateway to the Rhondda Valleys in South Wales. We welcome visitors of all ages, coach tours and school groups 5 days a week from Tuesday to Saturday 9am – 4.30. There’s lots to do here so we’ve split it out into a quick guide below:
The Black Gold Experience Underground Guided Tour
Our tour is the star of the show here. Our tour guides are all ex-miners who worked the coal mines of the Rhondda Valleys and they make every tour unique with their tales of underground life. Part of the tour is a ride on Dram – our virtual runaway coal dram which takes you on a rollercoaster ride through the mine! The tour is suitable for, and enjoyed by, visitors of all ages. Free interactive exhibitions
Our free digital and interactive displays bring history to life. Learn how our miners, colliery owners and communities lived while Rhondda coal powered the world. Sit in the parlour of a rich coal mine owner or visit a traditional shop.
Explore the courtyard and original mining artefacts – drams of coal, the Anderson bomb shelter and the Old Forge where the blacksmith worked on the colliery horses. There’s no need to book - you can pop in whenever we’re open and view our exhibitions. The upstairs gallery exhibition changes every few months so there’s always a good reason to come back and see us again.

Caffe Bracchi, The Chocolate Shop and Craft of Hearts
Our on-site café offers great meals and snacks, afternoon teas and lots more, while you can pick up handmade chocolates in The Chocolate Shop or book a chocolate making masterclass or kids party. Craft of Hearts is based on the first floor and sells craft supplies and also offers craft classes.
Events
We love putting on events here at A Welsh Coal Mining Experience and three times a year, the venue is transformed. At Easter, we host Easter Egg-stravaganza with children’s rides, activities and egg hunt. Halloween brings all things spooky with our Halloween Spooktacular event and our epic Santa’s Toy Mine magical underground experience takes place for a whole month before Christmas.
