Pedestrian crossing upgrades completed in Llantwit Fardre

Work has been completed to upgrade the traffic lights and provide additional footway improvements at Llantrisant Road in Llantwit Fardre (near Hill Drive), as part of a Safe Routes in Communities scheme supported by Welsh Government.

Contractor Centregreat Ltd has recently completed the final resurfacing for the work, which has introduced a Puffin crossing at this location – a more efficient crossing system than was previously in place. The crossing area has also been widened to four metres, creating a safer environment for pedestrians, particularly in consideration of the busy morning and afternoon periods.

The crossing upgrades are part of the wider Maesybryn Safe Routes in Communities scheme, benefitting from £454,800 funding contribution from Welsh Government in 2022/23. The scheme is designed to improve pedestrian facilities to encourage more active journeys to and from school, as well as other local facilities in the area.

All traffic management has now been removed at Llantrisant Road’s junction near Hill Drive, following the recent completion of the traffic light upgrades.

Councillor Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Investment, said: “I’m pleased that these crossing improvements at Llantrisant Road in Llantwit Fardre have now been completed, to introduce a more efficient traffic light system and to create a safer environment for pedestrians using this busy crossing point.

“The Council continues to welcome important Safer Routes in the Community funding from Welsh Government, which has helped us introduce similar improvements in Llwynypia, Abercynon, Llantrisant and Cilfynydd in recent years, and in Ton Pentre earlier this year. Residents could find out more about the improvements for Llantwit Fardre in a public consultation that ran in October and November, and the first works have since started.

“Other future elements within this scheme will introduce a zebra crossing near Crown Hill’s junction with Hillside Court, new proposed traffic calming measures along Crown Hill, and a number of junction improvements within the Maes y Bryn estate. Improvements to lighting and resurfacing have recently been completed on the path between Lancaster Drive and Llantrisant Road, which is a route that is used locally to reach Maes y Bryn Primary School.

“The Council will keep residents fully up-to-date as the scheme progresses. Thanks to the community for your cooperation while the recent improvements at Llantrisant Road were completed.”
