Pay as you Feel Shops - Big Bocs Bwyd

Big Bocs Bwyd is a scheme in a number of RCT schools which have Pay As You Feel shops in their school yards where people in the local community can get food that has often been donated by supermarkets, local shops or allotment societies. Some schools have also added areas for learning, places to grow food, and spaces to eat and drink.

These projects are aimed at reducing food waste. Food often comes from supermarkets who have too much food they cannot sell, and Big Bocs Bwyd prevents perfectly good food from ending up in landfill. The Pay As You Feel element allows families to contribute what they can to their purchases and money is then reinvested into the Big Bocs Bwyd to ensure stock levels are maintained.

The shops are currently available in the following schools:

  • Penpych Primary School
  • Treorchy Primary School
  • Bodringallt Primary School
  • Gelli Primary School
  • Ysgol Nantgwyn
  • Tonyrefail Community School
  • St Margarets Catholic Primary School
  • Glenboi Primary School
  • Cwmaman Primary School
  • Pontygwaith Primary School

Please contact the schools themselves for details of opening hours and any further information which may include opportunities to volunteer and support Big Bocs Bwyd in your local school.

More information about the Big Bocs Bwyd scheme on a national basis is available at www.bigbocsbwyd.co.uk

Many other schools also offer food pantries on a smaller scale, or support access to Food Banks for those who may need them. Please speak to your school to see if these are offered in your area.
