The project is funded as part of a wider £75.6m investment across Greater Pontypridd from Welsh Government’s Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme. ISG is the appointed contractor for its delivery.

The newly-built school building contains first-class education facilities in a 21st Century building, which was delivered under phase one works – alongside a new Multi Use Games Area and much-improved outdoor areas.

The wider scheme, to be delivered under phase two during 2024, includes a new playing field, staff car park and on-site bus drop-off area. The intention is for the school to achieve Net Zero Carbon in operation, while the existing buildings will be demolished.

All elements of the project will be completed by September 2024 to form the new Welsh Medium primary school, Ysgol Awel Taf – for Welsh Medium pupils from Heol y Celyn Primary and YGG Pont Sion Norton.

During September and October 2021, the Council consulted on plans for the new school, allowing members of the public to view and comment on the proposals. It also featured a local public event held in Rhydyfelin, where those interested could speak with Officers and the appointed contractor in relation to the plans.
