About the Apprenticeship Scheme

Our Apprenticeship Scheme has been running since September 2012. During that time, we have employed over 300 Apprentices across the Council in many different service areas.

In 2018 and 2021 Rhondda Cynon Taf won Employer of the Year award at the Apprenticeship Awards Cymru for their outstanding Apprenticeship programme.

More recently, we received the prestigious Princess Royal Training Award in recognition of the commitment to training and the positive impact that developing staff has had on the local authority.

The Scheme is open to anyone from the age of 16 and there is no upper age limit.

During your Apprenticeship, you will work alongside experienced colleagues, gaining job-specific knowledge and skills. Apprenticeships mix on-the-job training with classroom learning. They provide you with the skills you need for your chosen career that will also lead to nationally recognised qualifications. As an Apprentice, you earn while you learn and receive other benefits as well.

If you join RCT Council, we will provide you with a dedicated buddy to help you learn new skills and achieve your formal qualifications.

Apprenticeships with RCT Council are fixed for two years and paid at National Minimum Wage, depending on age. As of April 2024, the current rate is:

  • 21 & over       £11.44
  • 18 - 20           £8.60
  • Under 18       £6.40
