Public libraries across Rhondda Cynon Taf will be joining in with The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations - and they need your help.

On February 6, 2022, Her Majesty The Queen became the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years of service to the people of the United Kingdom, the Realms and the Commonwealth.

A special extended Bank Holiday Weekend in June will provide an opportunity for communities and people in our County Borough to join others throughout the United Kingdom to celebrate the historic milestone.

RCT Libraries will be staging a commemorative Platinum Jubilee Exhibition featuring photographs and newspaper coverage of both The Queen’s Coronation at Westminster Abbey on June 2, 1952, and the subsequent Royal Visits to Rhondda Cynon Taf. The RCT Platinum Jubilee Exhibition will travel around library locations in the County Borough. Further details to follow.

RCT Library Locations And Opening Hours

All RCT Libraries across the County Borough, festooned with bunting, will also be displaying books about The Queen and The Royal Family to mark the special occasion.

Street parties are also being held across Rhondda Cynon Taf and the Council’s Park & Dare Theatre and Coliseum Theatre, along with various public attractions, will be illuminated for the duration of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

Platinum Jubilee flags are also being flown at civic buildings across the County Borough, at Llys Cadwyn, Pontypridd; Rock Grounds, Aberdare; and Rhondda Cynon Taf Council Offices at Clydach Vale.

RCT Libraries are also providing photographs and support to organisations which are planning their own exhibitions, courtesy of the RCT Archive.

The public is also being asked to help extend the comprehensive RCT Archive for future generations by asking residents to take along their own photographs relating to The Queen’s 70-year reign, to three designated libraries in Rhondda Cynon Taf - Llys Cadwyn in Pontypridd, Aberdare Library, and Treorchy Library.

Library staff would also like to see your own old 8mm and Super 8 films of special Royal occasions in order to borrow them for conversion to a digital format. These will be returned safely to you, along with your own digital copy.

Do you have any photographs of The Queen, Royal Visits to the County Borough, or Silver/Gold Jubilee street parties? Take them along to the designated libraries and they will also be scanned, digitised and stored in the RCT Archives for future generations to enjoy. The original photographs will be returned to their owners while they wait.

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Beacons will be lit at various locations across the UK on Thursday, June 2, to mark the majestic milestone. Beacons will also be lit at locations across Rhondda Cynon Taf, with the official Rhondda Cynon Taf Council Platinum Jubilee Beacon located at Rock Grounds, Aberdare, CF44 7AE.

There will be something for everyone to enjoy at RCT Libraries as part of The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. Younger residents will be able to to enjoy the fun too, taking part in special Lego sessions with a Platinum Jubilee theme. These take place at Llys Cadwyn, Pontypridd (Monday, May 23 at 4pm); Aberdare Library (Tuesday, May 24 at 4pm); and at Treorchy Library (Wednesday, June 1 at 2:30pm).

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee themed storytelling and craft sessions, aimed at younger residents, also takes place at Llys Cadwyn, Aberdare Library and Treorchy Library on Tuesday, May 31 and Wednesday, June 1. Children’s craft packs will also be available at all RCT Libraries to take home and enjoy.
