Working in an Out of School setting

An Out of School setting typically operates outside of the standard school hours, either before school or after school finishes for the day, or during the school holidays.

Typically an Out of School setting will care for children of school age, depending on the setting, this could range from 3 – 12 years.

To work in an Out of School setting you will need to hold a valid Playwork qualification. Some settings are able to accept unqualified staff, with the expectation that you work towards gaining your qualification whilst in the role, this is dependant on the setting.  To find more information on what qualifications you need and to see if you hold a valid qualification please use the link : https://play.wales/playwork/required-qualifications/

You will also need a minimum of a level 2 Safeguarding and a Paediatric First Aid certificate that has been gained within the last 3 years. These are required by Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW) in the National Minimum Standards (NMS) that set out the requirement of all Childcare settings across Wales. Any setting that operates for over 2 hours per day MUST be registered with CIW.

If settings provide snacks, it is best practice for you to also hold a valid Food Hygiene certificate.
